The restaurant scene in DeSoto County has continued to grow over the past year, with the opening of more than 10 restaurants. At least 12 more are expected to open next year.

From family eateries and outposts of longtime Memphis favorites to breakfast eateries and burger restaurants, the New Places are a diverse collection.

Here is an overview of what’s new and in preparation:

New restaurants

2 crazy guys

6518 Goodman Road Suite 108, Olive Branch; (662) 408-4815

2 Crazy Fellas opened in January 2021. The restaurant sells Cajun-inspired dishes such as “voodoo nachos” and okra. Banana bread and puddings are also on the menu, along with root beer floats.

Jacks Family Restaurant

7488 Hacks Cross Road, Olive Branch; (601) 651-3117

The Birmingham, Alabama-based chain opened in early October. Jacks serves American-style dishes such as burgers, fries, fried chicken, and sandwiches.

Town Hall Cheesecake

Town Hall Cheesecake on Thursday September 17, 2020 at Silo Square in Southaven.

Originally based in Hernando, City Hall Cheesecake opened its store in Silo Square in September 2020. Cheesecake flavors, which include Banana Pudding, Snickers and Blueberries, change daily and are available by the slice or in the form of a cupcake.

I need coffee + sushi now

Two separate restaurants sharing a single counter, I Need Coffee and Sushi Now, opened at the end of September 2021. I Need Coffee’s menu includes boba, sandwiches and, of course, coffee. Sushi Now’s menu includes tuna and lettuce wraps, spicy crayfish nachos, and inventively named sushi rollslike the green hornet and the red-headed stepson.

Open mid-September 2021, Top Shelf Grill offers a view from its rooftop bar as well as a menu that includes salads, burgers, steak and salmon as well as 49 different beers. They also offer the possibility of organizing private dinners in the restaurant.

Mrs. Hippie eats

Primarily a takeout shop, Mrs Hippie Eats opened in April. The restaurant offers a wide selection of frozen casseroles and soups ready to thaw and reheat as well as a handful of fresh items including a chicken salad.

World Famous Turkey Leg Express

Giant turkey thighs are the star of the menu, but other dishes include stuffed whole Cornish hens, whole catfish, and smothered pork chops.

Acai bar

Known for its Acai sorbet bowls and smoothies, the Acai Bar offers organic, gluten-free, dairy-free, and soy-free options to patrons.

Elfo Grisanti’s

Opened in November 2020, Elfo Grisanti’s serves original Grisanti pizzas, salads and desserts in the pizzeria section of the building, while a fine dining room offers Grisanti family specialties.

Sammich Shaq d’Almeta

6555 highway 161 N Murs; (662) 510-8160

Almeta’s Sammich Shaq opened on November 30, 2020 and is one of Walls Mayor Keidron Henderson’s favorite places to eat. A bar and grill with a Louisiana-Chicago twist, Almeta’s offers a large menu that includes burgers and fries, wings, vegetable mixes with chicken and shrimp, and catfish.

Juicy seafood

Opened in November 2020, Juicy Seafood offers seafood porridge with a variety of different seasonings. It also offers a do-it-yourself seafood combo as well as special combos.

This Memphis restaurant’s Southaven location is slated to open in late December. The menu includes shrimp, snow crab and lobster tail.

Mexican Bar & Grill Tekila

6343 Getwell Road, Southaven

The Tekila Mexican Bar & Grill, which is slated to open in winter 2022 in Silo Square, is also located on North Germantown Parkway in Cordoba. The menu offers modern Mexican cuisine such as fajitas and taco salad.

Beans and leaves

2867 May Blvd # 104-105, Southaven

Scheduled to open on December 4, the cafe plans to serve tea, pastries, ice cream and, of course, coffee. There will be outdoor seating as well as seating near an indoor fireplace.

Central barbecue

Central BBQ Chicken Nachos on Wednesday April 29, 2021.

Central BBQ, which opened in 2002 and has four locations in Memphis, will open its first location in Mississippi in the summer of 2022 at Silo Square.

The wing guru

The Wing Guru on Tuesday February 11, 2020, in Southaven.

Wing Guru’s Silo Square location will be Southaven’s second location, but the first location to have a full bar. The menu options include 21 flavors of wings, cocktails and beers.

Georgia Blue

6389 Getwell Road, Southaven

Georgia Blue, a Mississippi restaurant, will open in Silo Square. The restaurant is known for its menu featuring southern-style fish and meat dishes, pastas, sandwiches and a cocktail menu featuring the restaurant’s own range of spirits.

Vampire penguin

2868 May Blvd, Southaven & 2353 Hwy 51 South, Suite 2, Hernando

Two Vampire Penguin locations will open in Southaven and Hernando. The Southaven location is slated to open just before Christmas or just after New Years, while Hernando’s location is slated to open in January. The vampire penguin will serve shaved snow and a variety of desserts.

Whataburger

Two Whataburger locations are slated to open in Southaven in 2022. The Texas-based chain is known for its burgers, fries and breakfast wraps. The location off Getwell Rd. Is scheduled to open for the first time in early 2022.

Fresh Valley juice and salad bar

Open in early 2022, the Silo Square restaurant will serve freshly squeezed fruit juices, smoothies and teas, as well as make-your-own salads.

The stars of barbecue

BBQ Allstars, a 12,000 square foot hypermarket created by seven-time world barbecue champion Melissa Cookston, hopes to open later this month. It will include a wide selection of barbecue related products, outdoor living items and a cooking class area.

Mugshots Grill & Bar

6400, chemin Goodman, olive branch

Opened in January 2022, Mugshots Grill & Bar is known for its beer burgers and fries. Other dishes on the menu include wraps, salads and chicken dishes.

Staks pancake kitchen

Staks Pancake Kitchen will open in Silo Square in Southaven in spring 2021.

The Staks’ Silo Square location will be the third location for the Memphis-based restaurant. Known for their make-your-own pancakes and omelets, Staks also offers an extensive menu of lunch options.
