History’s great novels are about pure hearts driven by true love to overcome insurmountable odds and endless challenges, ultimately ending in a passionate embrace and enduring love. Last Best Brewing & Distilling’s Sweetheart Series is a lot like this, except with beer and gin.
Think of Last Best’s beer as the silent, independent and unwavering hero, while its gin is a bit wild and a free spirit looking to explore. How could these two incompatible souls ever be together? Certainly, their love could never last. Of course, true love always wins – the odds are beaten, the challenges overcome, and together the sum is greater than the separate parts.
The Sweetheart series is where these two parts come together – gin-inspired beer and beer-inspired gin, different but becoming together. This year, Last Best is launching three limited-edition gins and their favorite beers. The releases are named after iconic country and western duos whose harmonies inspire and contrast while creating something beautiful together.
Last Best Brewing & Distilling is unique in that it not only brews great craft beer, but also creates world-class gin. The creative minds behind Last Best’s products brainstormed how to marry brewing and distillation programs, and the idea of launching a series of seasonal gins and beers inspired by bright, lemony, fruity and floral flavors. gin cocktails was born – thus the Sweetheart series was born.
“We wanted to work with flavor profiles that fit both gin and beer. Not everything that works in a gin will end up well in a beer, and vice versa,” says Teaghan Mayers, the brewery’s director of operations.
“Having the opportunity to present both home-brewed beer and gin to a high standard under one roof is incredibly special to share with our guests,” adds Master Distiller Bryce Parsons. “It is truly a unique experience that we are proud to offer.”
The first release in Last Best’s Sweetheart series is Johnny & June. Like the Man in Black, Johnny – Yuzu Gose has a citrus bite and an ever so light salty aspect. June – Citrus Yuzu Gin is elegant, refined and deliciously summery.
“In this first version, we focused on the citrus part of the flavor spectrum. Yuzu and salt form a natural pairing, and the brewing team has found the balance between saltiness, acidity and the unique floral and citrus character of yuzu in this beer,” Mayers says of the beer component. by Johnny & June.
For the gin, Parsons says, “I loved the challenge of bringing so much citrus into the gin’s flavor profile without toning down the classic juniper notes of what makes gin, gin. June has a wonderful citrus welcome but reminds you that this is still a gin at heart.
Together, this duo shows off the best of Last Best – creative, fun, memorable and a little different. Quantities are limited, so experience Johnny & June’s summer love at Last Best while you can.
