Don Jose’s Bar & Grill opens on Carson Street

Don Jose’s Bar & Grill on Carson and Corbett streets is a new restaurant with some familiar faces.
General Manager Alecia Lorca worked at Carson City Joe’s in the same building before it closed in January. She says that after being open for a week, former Joe regulars are slowly creeping into Don Jose’s.
“We have most of the (same) menu, but we have Mexican — tacos, burritos, quesadillas — and we’ll add things slowly,” Lorca said on the Wednesday call.
Don Jose’s also has extended hours of operation, open Tuesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Lorca works to get a liquor license from the city to open the bar.
She said despite the change in name and ownership, the restaurant’s location still faces challenges. It’s just outside of downtown, so Lorca says it doesn’t have the same foot traffic as the restaurants south of it. And the building is partially underground, with windows facing the feet of passing pedestrians.
“A lot of people still don’t know we’re open, and a lot of people don’t even know we’re here because of the part of town we’re in,” she said, adding later. “This building is weird. It’s even weird to spot it.
But she is confident that once again people will visit Don Jose, they will keep coming back for the food.
