Today is PonyBoys (506 E. Washington St., 440-247-8226), a new modern Mexican restaurant from Ryan Scanlon and Christian Kalinyak, both veterans of the Chef Art Pour Restaurant group. Since the fall, the team has been working to convert the former Violante’s restaurant into a fresh, refined and contemporary space that hardly looks like itself.

“We liked it because it was a small place, a limited number of places, quite controllable and in a large community,” notes Chef Scanlon, who lives in the area.

The PonyBoys can accommodate 60 people, including the 15-seat bar. When the patio goes live in the spring, it will add 20-25 additional seats.

A quick glance at the menu reveals a range of dishes that clearly attempts to differentiate themselves from the typical “mod Mex” taco factory. Starters include bright, refreshing and spicy prawn aguachile, octopus and chorizo tostada, avocado and jicama salad, and tortilla soup with chicken and chili peppers.

The tacos section (choice of corn or flour) features a wide range of toppings that include rum-iced carne asada with mango and habanero salsa, grouper with chili-garlic salsa, a vegetarian cauliflower, date and thyme, and the Spicoli, with Funyun – fried chicken in a crust, adobo and lime cream.

For the main event, there is a duck confit tamale with queso fresco and garlic salsa, cocoa-rubbed rib steak, pulled chicken with kale and rice, and a beer chicken to share for two served with tortillas. and accompaniments.

From today, PonyBoys is open for lunch and dinner every day except Sunday.
